That started happening with our dog and we found out she was slowley going blind. You might want to get your dog checked out. Our dog is only 4 and is pretty much completley blind. :-(
Reply:she may think you are going to mess with one of the family members when i'm in my chair if anyone comes in the room or anywhere near me he grawls and bites at them if they just come to the door he starts grawling afer they get away he is o.k and stops grawling, and biting.if he is not in my chair with me he will jump in my chair and stay until they are out of sight.
Reply:have you run over her tail or something recently? i would think you have "hurt" her in someway like that. or maybe your wheel chair makes a sqeaky noise or something that she doesn't like...try announcing you are coming in a room before you come in....she might respond positively to that. i had a dog whe i was younger that started to go blind and when she did she'd get scared when she'd hear someone come in the room and hide. the only way she was ok is if we said "hi ariel" or something.
Reply:She still loves you, but I urge you to take her to a vet. She's either losing her hearing or has an ear infection, causing her not to hear your approach, which startles her, or her vision is going. Does she settle down once you speak to her? If she keeps growling, that could be her hearing.

If she comes in the room while you're sleeping, she's making that choice. And obviously, you are already in the room in order to play with her, so she's okay with that, too.

It's your approach that's startling/scaring her. She should be used to the wheelchair by now. Perhaps you're coming out of shadowed area into the light? Or do you keep the lighting in your home dim? I'd put money on a vision problem.

We have sighted dogs at our rescue shelter who spook and go bananas if I startle them as I return from an evening walk in the woods, even if I've bottle-fed them since infancy. They settle down and actually get embarassed when I call to them.

Please get her to a vet so you can determine what the problem is, and get things back on course. I'm sure she still loves you, and that there's a physical problem here.

Good luck to both of you.
Reply:First, to the vet with you. If nothing is wrong, she's confused about her place in the family pack. Don't use any force or aggressiveness--the dominant wolf or dog is calm. Use NILIF: http://k9deb.com/nilif
Reply:Hmm, that sudden change in your dog's disposition is certainly strange. However, it most likely means something. Animals don't just change for no reason. Maybe she is sick or something and that is changing her personality and making her more irritable. It sounds like you need to take a trip to the vet or risk getting bitten
Reply:You did not say what kind of a dog she is, nor how long you have had her. All dogs don't want you to fool with their food, just about, so our dog does that, but loves us. We don't bother here when she is eating. For some reason she is getting spooked, and there is a reason. You just have to think about what has happened lately and if you cannot think of any particular thing, then for sure take her in for check up.
Reply:Sarah is right - your dog is confused about where he stands in the pack. He should NOT be allowed on furniture and must never snarl or growl at you. NILIF looks like a very good reference. Take what it says seriously, before you get hurt.
Reply:well some dogs are food agessive and territory agressive too. My dog doesnt do this with me but if another animal gets close to her bowl while she is eating she will growl or snap at them. I talk to her in a firm voice and its stops.
