My dog is about nine years old and he has always had gum problems, and now he is losing most of his teeth. Ive always bought the same food for him but I fear that it is getting too difficult for him to chew. What do I feed him?
Thanks.
Would would I feed my aging dog (malteese) who is losing all of his teeth?
You could feed him the same dry food, just soak it water for 5-10 minutes before feeding to moisten it up for him. You should put him on senior food if he's not already on it. That will give him some extra nutrients to help him as he ages and support his joint, vision, bones...all the stuff that goes as a dog ages. The best way to switch is to use 1/2 of the old food and 1/2 of the new for about a week. This will wean him off the old food so he doesn’t get an upset tummy or diarrhea.
Lots of the senior foods have added goodies to help their teeth so perhaps some of his choppers can be saved! Good luck!
Reply:Wet food unfortunately. He will be able to gum it. Check with your vet about how to transition your dog to wet food.
Reply:You can soften his current kibble with a little warm water or start to feed him soft canned dog food.
Reply:just throw it all in a blender and puree it
Reply:Get soft dog food in a can.
Reply:Mix it with wet food to soften the food for him.
Reply:you could feed him a rice mixture of chicken etc...some kind of meat with the rice....they love this and they dont need to chew it.....good luck
Reply:I would think a good quality, soft canned food such as Canidae would work. You might run it by your vet as well and see if he/she can recommend something.
Reply:IAMS has food that is for aging dogs so it is easier of their teeth
If you are willing to spend more money, some dog food in a can dosen't require chewing
Glad to help!
Reply:If you go to a specialty pet store they have special food for what they call "granny Pets" It's a mixture of soft foods. They also have a special line of treats you can give.
Reply:What you should do is use the same food and get warm water and microwave it for 1 minute then poor a little bit into the bowl then poor it out. Do that again till there is no more water.. After that the food well get softer then usaul
Reply:you could feed it rice. Just boil the rice and feed it to the dog or put your dogs regular dog food in a blender.
Reply:TRY GRAVY TRAIN.
IT IS A HARD DOG FOOD THAT WHEN YOU ADD WATER IT MAKES A GRAVY AND SOFTENS UP THE DOG FOOD
Reply:I would first have him brought to the vets just to make sure he should not have a dentistry done and teeth pulled. If he needs teeth pulled, then he is probably uncomfortable. If you have already done this, than you have a few options.
Some dogs, even without teeth still eat dry food without any problems; they just eat and swallow- these are generally dogs that inhaled their food to begin with; my 14 year old chihuahua is one of those. For others, you may have to wet their kibble so it is softer and easier to eat. And then you can always use wet food.
Reply:Baby food
Dog food blended
Dog food mixed with milk (unless makes him poop)
Reply:wet (canned) food, or those soft ones that come in a package or put water in the dry and let it soak it up, makes it nice and soft.
