OMG!! my old dog's front teeth are falling out...?

I have a 10 year old pug good in good health. He's always had sraggly looking teeth. I check them out sometimes, probably every 2 months or so, because he hates his lips being yanked on.

I just took a peek and he's missing about 3 front teeth and one is loose. It's kinda dark and tartar-y around the bottom. He eats just fine, but this does not look good.

I know get him to the vet, but it's just after 5, so they're closed for the day--but I'm freaking out now.

I'm continuing to google, but all I find is about baby teeth.

Please help me if you know anything.

Thanks so much!

I would not freak out tonight because you don't know how long the teeth have been missing. Unless they start falling out tonight or he seems to be in pain when he eats or drinks. Get him a vet appointment as soon as possible for cleaning and removal of any other loose teeth. My lab had to have two front teeth removed when she was 9 because she had major dental problems. Other than a bit more drool, she was fine after we had it taken care of but had to go in for cleanings once a year afterward. They will put him under, clean the teeth, laser off any growths on the gums, and pull any loose teeth because these could cause bone infections from the roots. You will get an antibiotic to give him for a few days and he will be fine. He will eat the same day he gets it done.
Reply:call your vet and the animal hospital asap. you should have him checked out and you might have to put him on soft food. but follow their advice. also talk to any local breeders. PEACE.
Reply:dont worry...a lot of small dogs have teeth problems, and especially with his old age he will probably have them to. Luckily, dogs have a lot of teeth... like 42. so don;t worry too much. My dog is only five and we went to get his teeth cleaned twice and they ended up pulling 18 all together because they were so crappy. So don;t panic, take him o the vet when you can and see what they can do. my dog is missing almost all his front teeth, but its kind of cute cuz you can sometimes see his tongue poking out, but he can still eat dry food
Reply:My schnauzer started losing teeth 2 years ago.

Dental problems on dogs and cats are more serious than humans...the infections move much quicker, and the animals are in pain and don't always show it.

It's not life threatening right now, but you do need to take him in right away to get examined and see if any more teeth need to be extracted.

My dog only has about 10 teeth left, and she still has no problem eating dry food...they don't really chew dry food anyway...they engulf it...and it's true...she has her fangs and only 1 or 2 molars on top and bottom of each side now...and still has no problem with dry food.
Reply:i had a laso apsa (spelling?) and he front teeth fell out as she got older too. I was told that dogs lose their teeth just like we do. Who knows, all I know is that she was fine, its just normal.
Reply:Has he ever had a professional dental? Sounds like he's overdue for one.

Schedule an appointment with your vet.
Reply:Well losing teeth is part of old age of a dog, just like humans. Dental care is required throughout their lives to help them keep them for as long as they can. There is nothing you can do about the lost teeth, but you would have to see the vet as soon as you can to help with the remaining teeth. I say you won't be able to save the loose tooth. Bones have always been an aid to teeth cleaning, but as he is old now they may be a bit difficult to handle. His front teeth are his biting teeth so he would have trouble breaking any food pieces up so you would have to assist with that by giving him small chunks of meat. The vet can also advise on food suitable for older dogs.
Reply:it's not uncommon for dogs of this age to have front teeth that are loose.

call your vet first thing in the morning and set up an appointment. the back teeth should be checked to see if there are health issues that need attending.

you should brush his teeth once a week to keep good dental health for your dog.

good luck with your dog.
Reply:My old schnauzer girl has three canines and one incisor left in front. All of her teeth are gone and one side, but the other side is still in good shape. Oh yeah....did I say she is OLLLLLDDDD??? She also lacked regular care before we got her, and has no thyroid function so she is on daily supplementation. But anyway, even with all that, she gets along just fine. Eats dry kibble, and is happy, healthy (relatively) and happy. No need for an emergency visit for your guy, but a good dental is definitely in order.
