My dog won't let me brush his teeth.?

My dog who is 9 (boy).

Won't let me brush his teeth, ever since we got him.

So that means his breath stinks really bad but luckily we found breath spray for dogs for him, but he still doesn't like it when i spray it in his mouth, but when i get it in he's fine. He is a really gentle Anatolian Shepherd dog. So why won't he let me brush his teeth!! Thanks =D

My dog won't let me brush his teeth.?
Try using a wet washcloth over you finger and then go into the side of his mouth and just rub along the gumline gently. You can even put the dog toothpaste on the washcloth and then gently rub his gums. He will get used to it and then you can try to work your way into the toothbrush. If his teeth are already in need of a professional dental cleaning then I would get that done first. If his teeth are dirty then his gums may hurt and that may be why he is resisting. Your vet. can clean his teeth for you.
Reply:that is unnatural for them, i would like it either if i was a dog.

Give him a raw meaty bone, this will clean the teeth and freshen the breath, better than any toothbrush can.
Reply:dogs hate their teeth being brushed you have to try from birth. your vet may need to sedate him if his breath is very bad.
Reply:Most dogs do not like people messing with their mouth. the only person my dads dog allows to do it is the groomer. she must have a trick up her sleeve. Try doggies treats.
Reply:dog toothpaste is salvia activated, so you can put some on your finger and rub it on his teeth and it works the same.
Reply:You needed to start when the dog was a puppy to get him used to you messing around with his mouth. Dogs his age don't want anyone messing around with their teeth plus at his age his gums could be sore and you trying to brush might hurt him. If you are really concerned set up an appointment with your vet to have them clean them professionally.
Reply:i dont know! try it when he is REALLY sleppy and then he will not really notice. Take him for a run or to a dog park. then , sray or bursh his teeth. :)
Reply:How would you like something 2x as big as you to jam something in your mouth? Even if you are close to them and the trust you, its not natural for that to happen. Is the dog trained? If so, you can get him to "sit" and see how that works.
Reply:Hey dont worry my dog wont let me either and his breath staaaanks. I would suggest taking him to the vet i think they have high quality stuff for the potent breath. My dog fights me and i have to have someone help me hold him so you could try that to.
Reply:Bad breath usually indicates rotting teeth, not just unbrushed teeth. I'd have a vet check him out. In the meantime, get him used to your fingers near his mouth, with some dog toothpaste on the tip of your finger.
Reply:First...get rid of those negative thoughts. Did your toothbrushing kit come with a rubber finger brush? It fits over your index finger and it makes it easier to brush their teeth. You must make it more enjoyable for him...do not rush him...take your time. The first time I brushed my dog's teeth I may have only cleaned four of them...but, it was a start. Don't don't like the noise of sprays of anything..buy some doggie toothpaste and start all over ....
Reply:Ah yes... a common proble with most pet owners. Well the key is to get your pet use to the brush. Try taking an old tooth brush and putting wet food gravy on it. Tastes good huh? Well hopefully that will be enough to get him use to it. Remember keep dipping it and let him lick for starts. Don't rush the process. It's a gradual thing.
Reply:My dog tolerates having his teeth brushed but we have been doing it since he was a puppy. The last time I bought him a toothbrush I did see a few options besides a toothbrush. They have the brush that you put on your finger- if he's gentle with you he may tolerate that better. They also have wipes that you can wipe over their teeth, although I didn't think that would be very easy to do. Your dog should be getting a regular teeth cleaning at the vet. If he is getting his teeth cleaned and he still has terrible breath, he may have a bad tooth that needs to be pulled.
Reply:Take him to the vet and have his teeth scaled. Dogs, like people get plaque, tartar and periodontal disease (gum infection). They will put him under anesthesia so he won't feel a thing, scrape his teeth with a scaler to remove tartar, then polish his teeth and rinse his mouth with a flouride rinse, just like your dentist does. If he has any bad teeth, they will call you while your dog is still sleeping to ask if you want them pulled. That way you don't have to bring him in again just for a tooth pulling. THis whole thing can cost upwards of a couple hundred dollars, but its well worth it. If your dog's breath is that bad, his teeth may be infected and painful. Having a thorough cleaning done will reduce the discomfort in his mouth, as well as tyour discomfort in your nose!
Reply:Dogs aren't meant to have their teeth brushed, sure it is an option, but most dogs wont settle for it.. It is unnatural for them...
Reply:I have no intentions of being offensive but being a dog handler and breeder for many years I have never attempted to brush any dogs teeth. Dog saliva does the job efficiently. This dogs breath is stinking for some other reason best checked out by a D.V.M. Good luck
Reply:My Boxers won't let me brush their teeth either, so my vet recommended a dog mouth wash that once a week I put in their water bowl which helps to keep their teeth healthy and their breath fresh! Happy New Year!
Reply:some pet shops offer flavored toothpase like beef chicken etc....you may want to try that and also there are yip yaps which are like doggy altoids pretty cheap..so you both win
