Should adult dog's baby teeth be pulled?

my little maltese is about 15 months old and still has several baby teeth that he never lost, creating kind of a double row of teeth on the bottom and a couple of extra teeth on top. the vet recommends pulling them for dental hygiene reasons? what are your thoughts on this subject? i'm not trusting vets much right now.

Should adult dog's baby teeth be pulled?
toy breeds have alot of dental and gum problems if you don't keep up with it. i personally would have them pulled as i had done with a chihuahua i had once with a similar situation. I bet your dog would feel better afterwards too.
Reply:Usually vets remove them at the time a dog gets spayed or neutered (approx. 6 months of age). They remove them because they can cause a lot more tartar to build up on the teeth causing much increased decay.
Reply:same as in humans, sometimes this can cause a problem because their mouths will become "crowded" and sometimes plaque can form between sets, making them more prone to gum illnesses.
Reply:Yes, definitely have them pulled out. Having two rows of teeth creates pockets for tartar and calculus to form. If you do not clean it on a regular basis it will develop into periodontal disease. Also, it can lead to further destruction of the dogs internal organs if not taken care of.

Their mouths, just like ours are a reflection of their health. Healthy teeth - healthy dog. :)

Best of Luck!
Reply:This isn't something you have to rush and do.

You can wait and see if they'll fall out on their own (it is still possible) or have them pulled during the dog's first dental. (depending on breed, should be between 3-5 years)

If the baby teeth cause problems for the adult teeth, remove them. If not, wait.

P.S. This is a fault in show dogs. If you plan on showing in a conformation ring RUN and have them removed!
Reply:The retained baby teeth have caused the adult teeth to erupt into an abnormal position. The baby teeth will also trap food particles and allow plaque accumulation between it and the adult tooth. This will lead to gum inflammation (gingivitis) and possible loss of bony attachment by the adult tooth, bacterial infection, and tooth abscessation. It's a really good idea to get them removed. It's a simple procedure which can be performed under the same anesthesia when she gets spayed.
Reply:no you shouldn't pull them out because their teeth roots are more sensitive than humans. Give the dog bones too chew on and it will fall out sooner or later.

My dog showed her teeth to my other dog?

My German shepard likes to chase the cat. The cat was hiding in the box and my shitz tzu came up and did something to the German Shephard. It was a kind of like stop messing with the cat thing...... So my German Shepard starts to do this shaking of the lip thing, and then shows her teeth. She didn't growl, and her tail was halfway down but curled and ears were pointed up. I told her no and she stopped but I'm not sure what she was going to do. What does this mean and how should I handle it. I would say that the shitz tsu is mostly the boss. I'm not sure how long the German Shephard is going to take it.

My dog showed her teeth to my other dog?
It could be that the German Shepherd was just telling the other dog to back off. My lab will do this to my other dogs when she wants to be left alone. I would just watch her closely and make sure she doesn't have more malicious intentions.
Reply:The German Shepard was trying to show authority over the shitz tzu with a threat. They will establish their roles naturally. Treat them both equally and be prepared to break up a little fight.
Reply:If you aren't sure on how to read dog's body language, you might want to see if you can't find a professional in your area. Getting help now might prevent something bad from happening in the future, whether it is the cat or the Shih Tzu who might suffer.

I don't know how old the Shepherd is, but if she is just over a year, you really want to get the situation under control NOW. What you have described here, to me, sounds like a recipe for disaster.
Reply:you have to make it known that you are the alfa dog in your pack and will not tolerate violent behavior.

but i'm a bit of a madman and when i read your initial question, i got a mental picture of one dog taking out his dentures and showing them to another dog and they having a discussion about teeth and dental works and such as that.

so i'm really a cat person and therefore i have a license to be wierd.
Reply:The shitz tsu thinks he/she is in charge but the german shepard was just challenging that. I would expect to see some sort of small fight to establish who is in charge.

My dog is loosing teeth please help?

she is 7 yrs and shes lost abot 3 teeth in the past 4 months...her teeth have lots of plaque.....can we go to the vet and have them cleened???could they put falses teeth in???

she is a maltese

My dog is loosing teeth please help?
this happened to my dog. It scared me a lot, I asked a similar question on Yahoo answers myself and everyone told me to go to the vet, so I did. The vet told me that the tooth would fall out and I would give him medication until the gum healed. Then he said that my dog would have to eat soft food, and I would have to feed him plane rice and pasta weekly. He is missing a tooth but as peppy and nice as always!
Reply:see the vet for a dental. I don't think you can get false one. make sure she has easy to chew food.
Reply:i dont know alot about dogs but the best thing you can do is that her to the vet
Reply:You sure can go to the vet and get them cleaned. After they are cleaned you should go back regularly for cleanings (talk to your vet). A good treat for dogs to keep their teeth clean (I know a lot of products advertise this, but this works) is Greenies brand chewies, they are pretty expensive (like $8 for a bag) but sooo worth it. As for falsies, that sounds expensive....
Reply:dental help call the vet
Reply:You can go to the vet and have them cleaned, but i was told that they may have to put her under and thhis will cost you hundreds of dollars. You can get them all pulled too, but that may even be pricey.....as far as dentures. I don't think so, lol. She'll just have to eat mushy food.

My chihuahua has bad teeth, she has lost a few. Unfortunately, we found her and never took her to the vet (i'm young and poor) so we don't know how old she even is.
Reply:The teeth grow back. Go to a vet to clean the teeth or PETCO or PetSmart they can clean and a clip the your dog's nails'
Reply:I do not believe that they can put false teeth in but your dog should have an oral check-up with it's annual check up for heartworm and any needed shots. At that time the vet would probably recommend a cleaning especially if it is to the point of decay where the vet thinks that it may lead to tooth loss.

7 seems very young for a Maltese to lose her teeth, It makes me wonder if it is some type of a genetic defect in her lineage. If she is a purebred with papers I would see if you could track down her breeder and get some more info.
Reply:Yes. Dogs should have their teeth cleaned by a vet on a yearly basis. Abcessed teeth can cause all kinds of problems for dogs, not to mention cause their breath to smell terrible. If your dogs teeth are so bad that she's losing them, she's probably in a good deal of pain. The best thing to do for her is to make an appointment with her veterinarian as soon as possible so they can clean the teeth that are still good and extract the bad ones.

Sorry, but as far as I know, there are no doggy dentures. Dogs tend to do just fine if their missing a few teeth though. She might not be able to eat kibble without it being moistened a little, but overall, your dog will feel a whole lot better.
Reply:You should have them cleaned and maintain them with a toothbrush for dogs. if she is pure breed, then she is just like an older person, and it is common to lose teeth. get her treated for any gum diseases and her teeth cleaned and if anymore are too far gone then by all means have them pulled. you pay have to switch her to wet dog food if her molars are gone. remember to slowly switch her over or she will have diahrea.
Reply:its ok my aaunts dogs teeth do hat to they will grow back so dont worry
Reply:Yes, you can have your vet clean your dog's teeth. As far as false teeth go, you'll just have to ask your vet if he/she can do that. Just about anything that can be done for people, can be done for pets, now. This may be a procedure that your vet does not do but he could possibly recommend someone else who can do it.

Most pets do just fine without teeth.
Reply:go see the vet

Dog's baby teeth will not come out, help.?

We bought a little Yorkie a year ago, she has her permanent teeth in but also still has the incisor baby teeth, poor little thing, she looks like a little alligator, we have tried to see if they are even loose with a piece of dental floss, they are not. Does anyone know approximately how much to have the vet remove these. Am afraid to even guess. She weighs about four or five pounds. Thanks much.

Dog's baby teeth will not come out, help.?
prob not alot because of the little weight but depends who you go to
Reply:If she isn't in pain (as much as you) leave her alone, they'll come out when they're ready.
Reply:hey, this happened with my dog and the teeth eventually fell out, although my dogs teeth happened one at a time, your sound like they are all there at the same time. it sounds like a problem and you should get a dentist to check it out, just get a quote from the dentist, prices vary.
Reply:You should go to the vet to have them removed...the cost varies from vet to vet of course...my guess would be between $150-$250, depending on how many teeth need to be removed it could be more. Call around to different vets to find the best deal.

And in case your wondering, the price gets so high because it usually includes office visit, anesthia, surgery and pain meds..
Reply:I have a 6 lb Yorkie-poo with the exact same problem. She has about 10 baby teeth behind her adult teeth and also looks like an alligator : ) My vet is going to pull them when she gets spayed next month and he charges $10 - $15 a tooth. However, a friend of mine said she was charged $5/ea for her pup's teeth in Florida, so it might depend on your area. I don't have an at home fix, but it was suggested to me to give them bully sticks as they get stringy and help loosen them. Hope that helps a little!

the loose teeth belong to husband not dog!

Playing with dog-dog yanks toy out of mouth-now have 4 to 5 loose teeth-will these teeth ever get UN loose ??
He should go to the dentist and get them immobilized so the ligaments will strengthen and settle the teeth into where they should be. Probably take a month or so. The device will likely be like a retainer you get after braces.

Good Luck

Oh, and the person is supposed to hold the rope with the HANDS and the DOG uses his teeth for next time, LOL.
Reply:That happened to me once...but it was a baby tooth when i was like 10.....sry!!!!!

I believe that it will re-root itself though. Go to the dentist and suggestion: dont tell them how it happened...haha.

Good Luck!

:]
Reply:you deserved it,why would you put the dogs toys in your mouth not much for hygene are ya?
Reply:ew. you kiss him after he puts the dog toy in his mouth? he needs to go to the dentist and get them checked out. they won't go back to how they are unless a dentist steps in. that was pretty stupid of him to screw with his mouth like that.
Reply:If it were just one tooth...i wouldnt worry, but 4-5 teeth loose..OMG He should go see a dentist...and MAKE SURE HE DOESNT PLAY WITH THE TEETH OR WIGGLE THEM.

My dog has tartar in her back teeth, what can I do?

My dog has tartar in her back teeth. I only started to notice because she's had bad breath recently. I really can not afford to have her teeth cleaned by a vet, they are asking for $325. I really feel bad, I really love my dog. I don't know what to do. Is it too late to start brushing her teeth? I do buy her dental bones, but she does not like to chew on it much. I always feed her dry food.

My dog has tartar in her back teeth, what can I do?
I have several dogs, of all ages. My 11 year old has sparkling white teeth since I began feeding Canidae dry dog food. It is the only brand I have ever fed that actually keeps all of my dog's teeth sparkling white, and not a speck of tartar. My oldest ones had a tartar problem before I switched to Canidae.
Reply:get some tartar sauce

oH SnAp!~!~
Reply:there are tooth cleaning chew hides at pet stores that can fix that problem.
Reply:lick it off
Reply:Go get dog toothpaste, and a dog toothbrush and brush her teeth for her.
Reply:you can go to the vet and get it removed
Reply:brush em and keep up with the bones
Reply:I know that vets can be expensive. Try some of those tartar control treats that pets stores have. The best option may be to buy a toothbrush and start brushing his teeth. It's important to get the tartar off before his teeth rot out.
Reply:Tartar can only be removed by the vet. What you can brush away is plaque, the precursor to tartar.

It's never too late to start brushing her teeth. It can prevent reoccurence. If your dog is not very cooperative, they also have special rinses that you can use. It's better than nothing.

Work up a strict budget, and I'm sure you can save up the money for the procedure in no time.
Reply:you will probably have to brush her teeth yourself but dont use people tooth paste use a pet or dog approved tooth paste from the pet store and brush away...good luck
Reply:tarter on dogs teeth is nothing to feel bad about. You have not mistreated your dog at all. It is common among most dogs and is not painful or harmful in anyway. No, it is not to late to start brushing your dogs teeth, just DO NOT use "people" tooth paste.

It is great to see you are really trying to care for your dog but your dog will love you back either way.
Reply:i am not sure where you live, but if there is a veterinary school nearby they might do it at a lower cost for you.
Reply:Feeding her dry food is best, as well as giving her the dental chews. Best chews I know of are sold at most vet clinics and theyre called CET chews and the vary in bone size. Come to my clinic we're cheaper than $325 and you get better quality, hell I'll even do it for you, Im there all the time, of course its my job. Im in Utah, so let me know if thats the same place you are.
Reply:She needs to go to the vet before it gets worse cause bad teeth in a dog can also lead to other medical problems. I know you say money is tight but I would rather pay to get the teeth taken care of than pay an outrageous amount if it would damage anything inside her and cause the need for surgery.
Reply:The bones made of "carnasa" (white hard) clean the dogs teeth, Purina sells special bones for that too, it's normal for the animals to have tartar, all sea lions has it for example. You can buy toothbrush and the special paste for dogs, but that won't help to tell you the truth...
Reply:Depending on how much calculus (aka tartar) is built up, there are things you can do at home. While nothing but a good scaling will take off what is there, you can feed a dental diet (science diet t/d) or dental chews to help slow the accumulation of MORE buildup.

I don't know where you live, but $325 sounds a bit high for a routine dental prophylaxis (cleaning) We charge around $175-$200. What breed is your dog, how old is it, and just how much buildup is on the teeth...I could probably give better advice with that info!!
Reply:you can go to the pet shop and buy one of the dogs tooth brush with the dog paste that only cost least cheaper then doing it at the veterinaria clinic will cost more money . so i think it better to buy them at the pet store , you can save some money there. there are also dogs breath mints cans that you can find them near by the cashiers shelfts. no its not too late to brush youre dog teeth. there are also dogs bones that will help the teeth clean and strong.

Just rescued a dog from a shelter and his teeth are rotten, what can i do?

we rescued this cocker spaniel mix and we saw he needed a good cleaning, but then we saw his mouth at home. His breath literally smells like the sewer. his teeth are grey and his gums are covered in I don't know what.. but it's grey and really nasty in there. It looks like his gums are rotting. we brushed his teeth, but his gums seemed to hurt obviously. This dog was covered, i mean covered in fleas, a vinegar and water and dog shampoo killed all of those.. :) are there any home remedies for his gums? teeth? even if we have to take him to the vet for his teeth, is there anything they can do to reverse this? Can I do anything at home to help this??? please let me know if there is anyone dog rescuers that have dealt with this before.... i need help! so does he!

Just rescued a dog from a shelter and his teeth are rotten, what can i do?
He needs some antibiotics quickly. The gum disease can spread bacteria to his heart and kill him.

You are looking at major expenses with this dog. We just aquired a dog in the same shape, and we put over five hundred dollars just into dental care. You will also have spay costs, shots, and then you still have the possibility of heartworms and heart disease from the dental issues. And because your dog has fleas, you will also need to flea him and treat for tapeworms.

You just need to think about this situation before you decide to keep the dog. You are very easily looking at six to seven hundred dollars for the first week of vet care. And because your dog came from a shelter you also will have to deal with kennel cough and probably coccidia.

We kept the dog we got just because we felt so sorry for him, and could finance the care. Make sure you think about what kind of a commitment you are looking at with your dog. It will cost a lot of money.
Reply:Vet will say what needs to be done..

You didnt check him throughly before leaving the shelter?

I would've...
Reply:Take dog to the vet, only your vet will be able to tell ya what needs to be done to them...bet the baby is in pain...
Reply:You can have his teeth cleaned at the vets (cost about $100), talk to them about concerns and questions. If his teeth are in really bad shape he may need to have some of them removed. Remember if he does have to have his teeth cleaned / possible removed the short operation will bring much relief to the pain he is probably feeling. Kudos to you for adopting, spaniels make great pets!
Reply:well first go to the vet to make sure his gums arent infected,

For his gums to get stronger give him lots of rubber toys so they can chew on them and get his gum stronger. And lots of bones...

And good for you for rescuing him, im glad there is good in this world
Reply:wow. It sounds like he needs to get to a dog dentist fast. He probably needs a good cleaning and maybe some antibiotics if his gums are in rough shape too. See if the shelter can give you a referral to a dental vet who will give you a discount since you've rescued this dog.

After a good initial treatment, hopefully you should be able to manage the problem with routine brushing a few times a week.

Good luck!!
Reply:I've dealt with rotten teeth in rescues from puppy mills. Spend the $90 to have him drugged and his teeth thoroughly cleaned by a vet. He will live so much longer, be happier, smell better and be healthier and prettier if you do. Until then, when he's outside, give him a jumbo raw carrot or sweet potato to chew on. (Outside because of the mess.) My dogs love them! If he doesn't dig it, try putting a wee bit of butter on the outside to make it yummier. This will help scrape at the build up on his teeth. Put a little apple cider vinegar in his drinking water too.

Good for you, BTW for saving a life and taking such good care of the old fella.
Reply:I just rescued a dog with the same problem and all you can do is have the vet pull the teeth that are beyond salvaging. Many dogs have to have most if not all of their teeth pulled and do just fine and can even usually eat hard kibble after they are healed. Usually those rotten teeth are so painful and infected that having them gone is easier on them than leaving them in.

Have the vet do a thorough cleaning, pull the ones that can't be saved and get the dog on antibiotics and he should be good as new. This happens quite often and the dogs do much better with even all their teeth gone than trying to live with painful rotten ones.
Reply:I once had a cat that I got from a shelter who's breath smelled the same way. I took her to the Vet and she was diagnosed with gingivitis. The Vet said it was from eating garbage and was a common thing for strays to develop. I was told to get a baby sized toothbrush and brush her teeth with baking soda. Have you ever tried to brush a cat's teeth? It's not something they take kindly too. She was a young kitten when we got her and she turned out to be just fine, no problems at all.

However, her gums were not discolored. I would suggest that you do take the dog to the Vet, not just for it's dental problems, but for a full physical and look over. There may be other problems that you're not noticing. This dog has obviously had a hard life. It may benefit from some vitamins and very high quality food...but that is for the Vet to decide.

In the meantime try brushing his teeth with some baking soda and a very, very soft baby sized toothbrush. I'd also suggest giving him canned food so he won't have to chew too much. His teeth may be painful and some of them may have to be removed.

Good luck and it's so wonderful that you brought this doggie home and are caring for him so well. He sure is a lucky puppers!
Reply:All that I can recommend is take him to the vet and ask them. Sometimes you cannot fix things at home.
Reply:Take him to the vet and have him evaluated. I'm not sure there is too much you can do for him right now until you see if he has gum disease or what. Feeding him softer food will help, let the kibble soak in some warm water for awhile before feeding, or feed him canned or soft food.
Reply:I rescued an older Boston Terrier that had awful teeth. I brushed his teeth gently twice a day and made him an appointment to have his teeth cleaned. His teeth looked better even before he had his doggy dentist appointment. Go ahead and make him an appointment though.
Reply:Thanks for rescuing this poor guy. Sounds like he was in bad shape. My shelter husky/Rottie mix had teeth that he ground down almost to nubs, probably from fence chewing. My parents' Weimaraner (another dog I fostered first) had awful ground down teeth too. Sounds like he's got gingivitis/periodontitis. The vet may have to extract some of the teeth. If he hasn't been neutered, this can be done at the same time. The best thing as a preventative maintenance is a raw knucklebone to chew on a few times a week. My dogs are also on a raw diet and even my husky/Rottie who had nasty teeth at the age of 10 has almost white teeth again (what's left of them!) at age 12. You can also buy a tooth scaler in pet catalogues and larger pet stores and ask your vet how to use them. Teeth brushing may work too based on his compliance. This may be able to salvage some of the teeth if it's not too severe.
Reply:you got him from a shelter like this?? shame on them!!

I worked at a shelter for 5 years.. NO pet was ever let go in this condition.. a vet should have checked him prior to your adoption (checking teeth for age confimation they would have noticed the teeth problems)

plus they should have noticed the fleas and treated the dog...

read your adoption contract and see what it says regarding health guarantees or call them in the morning and ask what their policies are regarding this - and explain the poor condition of the dog...

did you use Dog shampoo or FLEA shampoo?? because dog shampoo wont kill fleas or flea eggs - buy a flea comb...

you will need to talk to a vet about the teeth - but see what kind of care the shelter is willing to follow up on first..

make sure the dog gets good qualtiy DRY food - not just wet;.. this is often the cuase of poor teeth..
Reply:It sounds like a vet is the only thing maybe they can pull the bad ones and then its gum might heel up
Reply:This dog needs dental treatment! You can't treat this kind of dental disease yourself. If your teeth were in this condition, what would you do? Home dental care is only for preventative measures i.e when a dog has good teeth to prevent them getting to this stage - at this point, the dog needs to be anaesthetised for a proper dental cleaning and most likely extractions. He will also need a course of antibiotics, because there will be infection in there.

As for the fleas - don't expect them to stay away for long with this kind of treatment. Get a proper treatment/preventative like Frontline from a vets.

You didn't get this dog from a shelter did you? Because I'd be shocked if a shelter let an animal go in this condition!

Seeking professional advice. I work in a kennel. What do I do when a fearful dog growles and bares his teeth.?

I sucessfully put the lead on the dog but when I went to take it off he growled, bared his teeth and I withdrew my hand. After that we were both nervous. I called in the person who had checked him in and she had no problem taking off his collar and scratching him behind his ears.

Seeking professional advice. I work in a kennel. What do I do when a fearful dog growles and bares his teeth.?
I raise Dobermans and at times one will act up. What I have found to work is taking the lead up so my hand was at the back of their neck, looking down and sternly saying NO one time and not losing eye cont ac for a few seconds then walk them a few more paces stop and talk friendly with them with a few praises. Pull the lead up again so your hand rests on the back of their neck again and hold on to the collar gently then with your other hand pat him a few times the whole time telling the dog how good he or she is then release the lead and then the collar. Main important point you cant show any fear.

If you can't let him out first, then go in and let him come to you. He won't feel threatened if he makes the first move.

Often dogs respond to different people because of scent. You may have handled another male before approaching him, or you may have a dog at home that left scent on you. Perhaps the other person did not.

Also, the other person may remind him more of his family. Or the person who checked him in was given permission by the owner, and you were not introduced by the owner.

There could be many reasons, but he sounds more fear-aggressive than just mean. See what you can do to earn his trust, and don't rush him.

Hope this helps some.

Dog has Bad Teeth and allergies to common products!?

I adopted a 7 year old Maltese. Found out he has food allergies and bad teeth. He can not eat, beef, chicken, corn without breaking out with soars all over his little body. Vet told me to feed him home cooked lamb and long grain rice. He is doing better but I'm concerned because I used to feed him hard food and rawhides to help him keep his teeth clean but he is so allergic to everything. I need help with other suggestions to help keep his teeth clean. He will not let me brush his teeth either. Any one with experiance they could share? Any tips? Thanks!

Dog has Bad Teeth and allergies to common products!?
I know there is special dog food you can give him, my friends dog had a similar problem and they feed her some special type of dog food. i can't remember what it was called and the dog died of old age, so I don't want to ask. I would try doing a search on special dog allergy food though.

What is better - to be a cat without nails or to be a dog without teeth?

A bear to eat them both!

What is better - to be a cat without nails or to be a dog without teeth?
A dog without teeth can't eat! That's mean.
Reply:cat without nails coz there is something about a dog without teeth that is really freaky
Reply:either way you are taking away the animals main self defense. They are both cruel.
Reply:A declawed cat can still eat what she's supposed to eat, and still can defend herself in some circumstances (bluff, climb some trees, bite). A dog with no teeth could not bite defensively and probably end up with health problems.
Reply:cat without nails. i'm a dog person

To be without teeth is to be unable to eat solid food and thus starve to death.

What can i use that's around the house to brush my dog's teeth?

Well go to a pet shop and buy a special tooth brush. They sell special toothbrushes formulated to fit into dogs mouth's betters without irritation. Also get a dog tooth paste BUT DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTH PASTE!!!! Or if you are looking for something to get rid of doggy breath some stores sell dog mints. Also be careful. Do not put alot pressure on the tooth brush. And at the beggining reward your dog with a treat for letting you brush it's teeth.

What can i use that's around the house to brush my dog's teeth?
Use a wet washcloth on your finger and scrub away.

The doggy toothpaste is a great investment though. It actually makes them tolerate the experience.
Reply:An old toothbrush. DO NOT use human toothpaste. Go to the pet store and get tooth paste for dogs.
Reply:Nothing!! DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTHPASTE!!!!

Please got to a pet supply store and get a toothpaste formulated for dogs. I use Petrodex for my puppy. They have an enzymatic forumla in beef flavor that she loves. I put apply it to a rubbery thing that covers my finger, then I slide it along the outside of her teeth. The enzymes work their way through the spaces between the teeth and to the back of the teeth. She gets compliments all the time on how great her teeth look!
Reply:Use a special dog toothpaste from petsmart or another pet store. By no means use regular toothpaste, it is not good for dogs. Also, don't brush them too often- dogs aren't like people and don't need their teeth brush daily.
Reply:Milk Bone dog biscuits are great for cleaning dogs teeth and the dogs usually like them.

Or else use your husbands toothbrush while he's sleeping, lol.
Reply:well you can go to the vet and get a brush and tooth paste for dogs . DO NOT USE HUMAN TOOTH PASTE very dangerous for animals can die from it .

I think the tooth paste and the brush can't cost more then $10.00 or even less.
Reply:If your brushing use a regular toothbrush and make sure you use dogs toothpaste its not that expensive.
Reply:While I've heard that you can make a hydrogen peroxide mix and a cotton ball to brush a dog's teeth, the best thing to use to brush a dog's teeth is actual doggie toothpaste, which you can buy in any pet store, along with either a doggie toothbrush, a finger brush, or even a child's toothbrush.
Reply:Use a small-headed, old or unused toothbrush. Don't use alot of pressure when washing a dog's teeth and buy doggie toothpaste from your nearest pet supplies store.

You can also use your finger, but if the dog gets irritated and snappy he could accidentally bite your finger and it probably doesn't clean as good.
Reply:a old shirt of yours, put it in your finger and clean her teeth.
Reply:Okay this is not exactly the answer to your question but there is fabulous stuff called PlaqueOff by ProDen. For a 25-50# dog you just put a 1/8 tsp on the dog's food per day it even comes with a scoop! one bottle would last for 6 mo for this size dog. It is a seaweed that softens the plaque on the teeth and prevents any more plaque from forming. Very cool stuff! I have used it on my dogs since June and they just had a vet apointment and he asked me were I had their dentals done! This eleminates putting your hand in the dogs mouth and scary dentals with anithistisia! It can be ordered online and at a variety of stores nation wide!
Reply:Tricky question. Well, if you wanna "brush" your dogs teeth..which btw doesn't make much sense..invest 10 dollars in a dog toothbrush and toothpaste.

Grannies old wig won't do the job.
Reply:I actually get a kick out of the idea of people brushing their dogs teeth %26lt;g%26gt; This to me, is an unnecessary thing to do IF you let your dog be a dog and give it raw bones to chew on. I know that often people feel that it's gross to do that and that's okay. If that's the case, then brushing your dog's teeth is going to be necessary. But the way a wolf or any wild animal keep's it's teeth pearly white is it gnaws on them bones and their teeth are strong and clean, and healthy. I always give my dogs raw bones to chew and their teeth are white. I've had people remark on how nice they looked and wanted to know what I did %26lt;g%26gt; I feed them chicken wings and chicken legs as part of their normal feedings (plus their dry food) and then buy also marrow bones (beef) and knuckle bones from the butcher. I also keep a watch out for other meaty bones that the butcher may have and he knows to keep a few 'goodies' like that around for my dogs. Even my corgi gets the same stuff as my American Indian dogs - and she can chew the bones up just as well!! It's a matter of preference I suppose but I prefer the natural way to go rather than buying a chemical product to put in my dogs mouth. Just wanted to suggest an alternative method!!

In Portland, ORegon what does it cost to get a 110lb dog's teeth cleaned?

just do it yourself,,, you can buy tooth scalers.... i do it by sitting on the floor, leaning up against the couch... i put the dog in between my legs on its back... i brush her belly, trim her nails,,, and clean her teeth in this position.. dogs get used to it.. especially while on their back *you are supporting them with your outstretched legs -- have fun not really a hard thing to do..

In Portland, ORegon what does it cost to get a 110lb dog's teeth cleaned?
Honest question, why do you think the dog needs it's teeth cleaned? My family has bred and trained dogs for generations and never had a dogs teeth cleaned.Cleaning dogs teeth is just a scam your dog will be alright, trust me.

Are Treats Like Beggin' Strips and Snausages Bad For a Dog's Teeth?

yes and no. theres nothing in there that provides benifiting substances for your dogs teeth. too much of that stuff can be bad for you dog to be truthful. they have treats from greenies, twistex, and other companies that are specially made treats that are helpful to dogs teeth and gums. there are also biscuits that are much better for dogs than the treat. natural choice carries some, eagle pack carries some, wellness carries some. so check those out!

Are Treats Like Beggin' Strips and Snausages Bad For a Dog's Teeth?
Yes and bad for the health of the dog. There is no nutrional value in those treats - it's like you eating cake all the time. yummm but that spare tire isnt attractive nor is it good for your heart.

Try things like all natural liver treats. Hard dog bones help to keep the teeth clean. Softer treats can stick in between the teeth and cause decay and rot. Hard treats scrub the teeth as the dog chews.. just like the hard dog food. (hint hint.. no canned food!!)
Reply:Not really, however, the red dye in them is bad for their bladder.
Reply:If you want to give your dog a treat, try a big slab of ribs. They have lots of connective tissue to clean the teeth, they make the dog exercise to rip the meat off of them, they make the dog think because he has to figure out how to make the ribs stay still while he pulls...

None of that crap is good for your dog, not for his teeth or his whole body.

Dogs shouldn't eat anything smaller than their heads, and it shouldn't be cooked. If it doesn't come from the meat aisle, don't feed it.
Reply:There are booda bones at petsmart that are aqua in color with nubs on them. My whole family's dogs love them, they clean their teeth and remove tatar and plaque and they are safe for them to chew! They are $3.00.
Reply:No, but they do cause dog breath.
Reply:Human food that is high in fat is bad for all even humans, a good diet rich in vitamins like a BARF diet is excellent and natural why give them anything else.

We have a really good lot of information on doggy diets on our site

What does it mean when a dog looses it's teeth?

my grandma gave me a little dog a west highland terrier and i don't know how old she is either and she just lost a tooth and i'm kind of scared

What does it mean when a dog looses it's teeth?
I have had terriers my entire life. I currently havea 12lbs Jack Russell. I know Westies are a smaller dog. Smaller dogs generally have more teeth problems than bigger dogs. It really depends on how old she is. Take her to a vet (do a little research if you don't have one. You'll want one you can trust and get to know well) and they should be able to estimate how old she is. If she is a puppy or a young dog they tooth is usually no biggie. But since she was given to you, you do not know her background. Loosing teeth can be a sign of something more serious. Take her to the vet and they can tell you for sure.
Reply:She's probably either very old or very young. Puppies lose their milk teeth much like humans do, and grow their adult teeth in. Senior dogs often lose teeth to peridontal disease. Either way, the vet should be able to estimate the age of the dog and tell you why it's losing it's teeth.
Reply:It means she won't be able to whistle any more.
Reply:Hello-Age can make tooth lost. Have your Vet. look at your Darling to make sure nothing is wrong.

Take Care!
Reply:She might be old, that is the main cause for loosing teeth but she might have broken it off. try taking her to a vet to find out for sure

If she lost a tooth due to old age it doesn't mean she is going to die soon, don't worry.
Reply:thats bad

Has anyone tried Petzlife spray or gel for their dog's teeth?

Does this actually work or is it nonsense? I am curious to see if anyone has had any actual, firsthand experience with this product. Have you seen any ill effects?

Thanks!

I have not, but I am also interested to see if anyone has. Maybe they have a comment board or something to that effect online. I'm starring this one! Good luck!

just make sure that the bones are real splintery and it is a BIG hunk o chocolate. make sure to give him a shot of tequilla to wash it all down with though, you wouldn't want him to choke!!

Do you know what I can clean my dog's teeth with. Natural products I may already have at home.?

the baking soda and a stiff toothbrush will work great if you have the yellow build up off of the teeth....that is where the odor comes from and it needs to be chipped off which is why it is best to have your vet office do the first cleaning then you can maintain at home.

Do you know what I can clean my dog's teeth with. Natural products I may already have at home.?
Just use a wet washcloth and wipe them off.
Reply:use bakeing soda.
Reply:you should get a soft toothbrush and just brush your dogs teeths with just some warm water.
Reply:mix baking soda with water and a very small splash of bleach make it in a paste ans brush away
Reply:Use a cloth with water. Don't use human toothpaste - it has fluoride in it and dogs don't understand that they aren't supposed to swallow it.
Reply:cotton ball and perxiode
Reply:You can use a very tiny amount of human toothpaste...about the same amount you use for small children(a squirt about the size of a pea), maybe even less and just use a toothbrush and be gentle.
Reply:Baking soda helps to scrub the tooth as well as to deodorize their mouth.
Reply:Bones from the butcher are a wonderful way to help clean dogs teeth. Of coarse you said at home, so I'll let you use your imagination. You need large bones so perhaps the neighbor who keeps parking his over-sized SUV in your space?? lol

German Short-Haired Pointer.

Is there an inexpensive way to clean a dog's teeth? Can you tell me what it is? By the way, she is a...?
Feed her raw meaty bones! I feed my dog a raw diet and I've never even touched a dog toothbrush/toothpaste. Sadly enough, her teeth are probably cleaner than mine. People consider a raw diet to be expensive, but in reality it's just as costly as a premium kibble (maybe cheaper). Plus, I save money by not doing any dentals at the vet's office. Her teeth are ridiculously white and shiny!

Check out www.rawfed.com and www.rawlearning.com, or email me for more info on a raw diet.

ETA

You can also give your dog all natural 100% digestible chews, such as bullysticks and moo tubes. Bullysticks are dried bull pizzle and moo tubes are dried cow trachea. My dog LOVES them and they clean teeth as well, although it's not as effective as raw meaty bones.
Reply:u can buy dog toothpaste and a dog tooth brush...thats all i know to tell you!
Reply:You can buy dog chews and treats that are designed to clean a dogs teeth as they chew - probably the cheapest way of doing it!
Reply:Yes, there are very inexpensive toothbrushes you can buy at the pet supply store as well as canine toothpaste.

This article has tips on how to do it, as well as getting your dog used to it:

http://dogtime.com/brushing-teeth-dogs-a...

Good luck.
Reply:If the dog's teeth are full of tartar to the point that brushing won't do it, you can get a scaler and scale them yourself, then keep them clean with regular brushing. Other than that, the only option is a dental at the vet office. Dogs with tooth decay/gum disease can get some pretty serious health problems - heart, kidney, or liver disease, so dental care is necessary.
Reply:Is she having a problem? If so, the vet will have to take care of it. If not, buy special doggie toothpaste and toothbrush. Take it easy, start slowly so the dog will get accustomed to it.

I brush my dogs teeth about once a week, should do it more though.
Reply:Dog toothpaste has enzymes in it that clean your dogs teeth even if you cannot use a toothbrush! So purchase some dog toothpaste and give him the recommended dosage daily!

Also, you can give your dog chew toys and crunchy treats that will help to clean his teeth too.

What is the best way to keep my dog's teeth clean and healthy?

I changed to Canidae dog kibble, 2 years ago..It worked miracles..OLD dog's teeth are sparkling white..the vet was amazed..

What is the best way to keep my dog's teeth clean and healthy?
give him/her bones and brush thier teeth all i give my dog are bones and it seems to work fine
Reply:Feed them dry foo and treats. you can also use greenies. you can buy them anywhere and they work.
Reply:Try those dentabones
Reply:Chewing on raw, knuckle bones is great for a dog's teeth. No other kinds of bones, though, and no cooked bones.

The other thing (and really important for some breeds) is to brush his teeth regularly. You need to buy a dog toothpaste because they're formulated for dogs and a soft toothbrush (if you have a very small dog you might want to get a finger toothbrush). Put a little toothpaste on the brush and just do the very front teeth the first few times so the dog can get used to it. Pick a time when he's quiet and tired to make it easier. Just be gentle and patient, your dog will get used to getting his teeth brushed. (Mine really like the mint toothpaste!)
Reply:DON' WAIT TO GET THE DOGS TEETH CLEANED BY THE VET. THEY NEED IT AND SOMETIMES DEPENEDING ON THE BREED EARLIER THAN OTHERS. THEN MAKE SURE TO PROPERLY BRUSH THEM EVERY SO MANY WEEKS AT HOME.
Reply:Doggy chew bones.

Profession vetinarian cleaning of teeth annually.
Reply:brush them with toothpaste or give them treats to help clean thier teeth
Reply:Chews with activated charcoal.
Reply:Give em a bone to chew on. It will help their teeth and their breath. plus it is good for them to gnarl on one.
Reply:I give mine the bones and toys that help their teeth. Also, since mine like to roll in everything outside I have to often bathe them and I also brush their teeth with a childrens soft toohbrush. They seem to like it. There are even different flavored toohpastes for doggies.
Reply:You can actually brush your dog's teeth. They have special toothpastes for dogs. They also have toothbrushes for dogs too, or you can buy a regular one and use that.

A good raw, marrow bone, or knuckle bone will keep your dog's teeth free of tartar. I buy those rope toys for my dogs that have blue or green strings intertwined in them. They are suppose to help with flossing and keeping your dogs breath under control.

You can also ask your vet to do a teeth cleaning for your dog. It can get expensive (so I have heard)
Reply:there and a special kind of treat called yip-yaps they brush and make your dogs teeth smell good. also you can buy a tooth brush and brush your dogs teeth. you can go one google.com and ask if you can put human tooth past ina dogs mouth to brush it.
Reply:A quality dry kibble like the ones at http://www.frrco.com/121668

It seems more expensive but you feed less because of the higher quality ingredients, so it costs about a few cents more per feeding.

Nylabones, which can also be purchased at the above site. These also give them something to chew to reduce boredom.

Kongs with dental ridges. You can put doggie toothpaste in the ridges and this will clean the teeth while they chew!

http://www.libertydogtraining.com
Reply:bones and chew ropes. Unless you want to brush their teeth! they do make doggie toothpaste. Mine just get chew ropes and bones.
Reply:The only way to keep your dogs teeth truely healthy is to brush them on a daily basis. Use a dog paste only CET makes some pretty tasty ones. My dog prefers the poultry flavor. A lot of groomers offer teeth brushing, but if they are just done once a month or so thats not going to help much, it has to be done daily. Then after the age of 6, whenever your pet is due for yearly vaccines have your pet sedated and its teeth cleaned on a yearly basis.

What's a good way to brush my dog's teeth? Can I use a new human's toothbrush? What can be used as toothpaste?

Hi!! Good question!!! It is very beneficial to brush your dog's teeth as often as you can (I brush my dogs teeth every night before bed). It DOES make a difference!!! Trust me! I do anywhere from 2-3 dentals a day at work :) You can always tell who brushes! A lot less tartar build-up and the gums are in much better shape.

It does not matter which type of toothpaste you choose, just remember.. no human toothpaste!!! Petco, petsmart, etc. all sell doggie toothpaste (chicken and peanut butter are favorites in my house!) along with tooth brushes appropriate for your dogs mouth (because of the shape of a dogs mouth ... try to find an arched brush.. easier to reach in the back! But human "kiddie" toothbrushes are OK too).

I did answer a question on how to start brushing and how to get your dog used to it... I will try to find it for you and paste it here for additional help: (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;... Let me know if the link does not work!

Even with routine brushing, it isn't a bad idea to have a dental done once yearly or every year and a half (or whatever you can afford! Our clinic charges anywhere from $120-180 depending on weight) once your baby turns 3 or 4.

Also, if you have trouble brushing every night, I also highly recommend Natural Bones! :) Stay away from raw hides, and "sticky" bones/treats, and wet dog food. All those are junk and will cause access tartar and plaque!

Give your dog a smooch from me!!!

What's a good way to brush my dog's teeth? Can I use a new human's toothbrush? What can be used as toothpaste?
Use ONLY dog toothpaste...human toothpaste can poison the dog..If the dog is big you could use a reg toothbrush but small mouths need small dog brushes.. Instructions on how to are on link..
Reply:You can use a human toothbrush, but I found a three headed toothbrush at the pet store that is easier to keep on the teeth of a squirming dog and gets all sides of the tooth done at one time.

Don't use human toothpaste, since a dog doesn't know how to spit. Any pet store should have a couple canine toothpastes to choose from.
Reply:Forget about brushing the dogs teeth and just feed him some femur bones or meaty soup bones from the grocery every couple of weeks. This will provide him a ton of enjoyment and the chewing will scrape his teeth clean and leave his mouth healthy. It is what nature intended.

We feed our dogs raw meaty bones daily. They NEVER get any commercial dog food ever and have the cleanest teeth and clean breath, healthy mouths.
Reply:Use ONLY dog toothpaste human toothpaste can poison the dog If the dog is big you could use a reg toothbrush but small mouths need small dog brushes
Reply:The others are correct about the toothpaste, do not use human toothpaste. You can get several types of tooth care products at a good pet store. Dental pads, you rub them around with your fingers; a rubber finger glove with nubs that works as a toothbrush, and a variety of tooth gels. I would advise against using a human toothbrush even a soft one. The primary reason for brushing the dog's teeth is to remove tartar. I recommend either the pad or the finger brush.
Reply:Listen to "Freedom" i second his opinion 150%!!!
Reply:You can use a soft-bristled human toothbrush

but they have dog ones

DONT use human toothpaste

its bad for them

they have toothpaste for dogs

you can get it at pet stores
Reply:you need DOG toothpaste. Human paste is very dengerous to your dog. The easiest way to brush is to get a "finger brush" which is like a cap that fits over your finger. When you brush you only need to do the outer parts of the teeth...don't try to pry your dog's mouth open to get to the inner surfaces. His tongue is rough, and will clean the inner surfaces pretty well anyway. Ask your vet to show you how if you're in doubt.
Reply:I'd use a soft bristled toothbrush, but DON'T use human toothpaste. Human toothpaste has fluoride in it, which is poisonous to dogs. You can get dog toothpaste at your vet's office.

What's the easiest way to brush my dog's teeth?

She doesn't like it, so she bites down on the toothbrush or runs away. Is there a good way of holding her in place?

What's the easiest way to brush my dog's teeth?
You just need to persist. Be very gentle, have her lying on her side (be good to do it when she's tired out from a long walk), and gently brush. Some dogs do better with a finger toothbrush. Some only like certain flavors of toothpaste. My 3 have had their teeth brushed regularly for years with mint toothpaste. I recently made a mistake and bought a different flavor and they're all fighting it.

It's normal for them to bite on the brush, they just have to have time to learn to stay still. I wouldn't recommend getting anyone to help you hold her down because you'll just stress her out more. Unless this is a giant breed of dog, you should be ok on your own.
Reply:You can buy beef or chicken flavor toothpaste. You can also ask your vet for tips or help.
Reply:get someone to help you hold her. put one arm around her body and the under her neck with your hand holding her face so she cant move. start by brushing the outer sides of the teeth and when you get to the inside press your fingers aginst the skin towards the back of the mouth so she cant bite down or she will bite herself. )do not put your hand in her mouth while doing this though)
Reply:Greenies bones..They are awesome and you can get a free sample from greenies.com. All natural. They work too!

None of the S%26amp;M NuTec brands, including GREENIES®, FELINE GREENIES®, SMARTBISCUIT® and PILL POCKETS® are included in the recent nationwide pet food recall initiated by Menu Foods and other companies. All of our product brands are safe for pets to enjoy.
Reply:Unless your dog has a specific problem with her teeth you could get some of those special kind of milk bones that clean their teeth wile they are chewing them.
Reply:they sell bones at the pet store that clean the dogs teeth, thats what I use, because my dogs won't let me brush their teeth at all
Reply:Just give her some of the treats that are out there that have the same affect.
Reply:You now have another way, look in walmart or Petco or Petsmart for a product by Hartz. It is a Dental Chew rubber toy, you can spread peanut butter or a small amount of cheese spread between the rubber layers and she will chew to get it out. In the mean time she gets her teeth cleaned. Go to www.hartz.com and look at the info under dogs. They have drop down boxes and you can view all of the dental products and chews they make. Try the other method and she will be begging to have her teeth cleaned!
Reply:Try the flavored toothpaste for dogs. I used to get mine the peanut butter flavor. She loved it. But then it became an issue of her trying to eat the toothbrush while trying to brush.
Reply:Wet a rag and pu doggie toothpaste on it. Wrap the rag around your finger and get him to naw on your finger...Rub your finger around on his teeth and he may actually like it...My 9 wk old pup loves it...I think maybe it feels good to have his gums stimulated..
Reply:well my shih tzu finally stopped fighting when he found out he wasn't winning. hold her down.
Reply:you can buy dog tooth brushes that are really long this way you don't have to put your hand in there moth, they also sell dog tooth paste and bones that dogs eat that clean their teeth so you don't have to
Reply:get good tasting tooth past.
Reply:I brush my Chihuahua's teeth when giving him a bath. He knows he cant get away during bath time. During the week he loves Greenies, get a sample from the vet.

i use denta stix for my dogs, its from the pedigree brand, its a chewable stick that will really help control tartar build up and also prevent bad breath, toothpaste and toothbrush don't really work well in most dogs they get irritated while brushing their teeth and end up chewing the head of the brush.also try chewable sticks from the vet store or pet store chewing make their teeth stronger and makes them busy in chewing.

Many companies make special dog toothpastes that are made so as not to harm them in any way. And, usually, you can just use a toothbrush.

I don't know how to brush my dog's teeth cz he doesn't like it he runs away whenever he sees the toothbrush.

I watched on the dog whisperer that maybe you should put the toothbrush in front of him and then give him a massage. Then he can start associating the toothbrush with a massage. Then when you do brush his teeth have someone else give him a massage. Then eventually he knows that every time he gets his teeth brushed that he will get a massage.

I don't know how to brush my dog's teeth cz he doesn't like it he runs away whenever he sees the toothbrush.
Try using a meat flavored toothpaste.
Reply:dont they sell those big bone look alike dog food in the pet shop? i thought that was there tooth brush! u should go to the pet shop and ask them or go to you vet!
Reply:If you go to your local vet, they usually have finger brushes. They are smally rubber brushes you can put over your index finger and they are less threatning to a dog. They also sell cheese and beefy flavored toothpaste that he might enjoy more.
Reply:buy a bone and the petstore and it should be a green bone shaped like a toothbrush it will clean his teeth.
Reply:go to his doc.they provide some mouth covering mask with which u can brush his teeth.
Reply:Why bother. Dogs have survived for many years without ever seeing a toothbrush or "doggy" toothpaste.

I'm convinced this is just another gimmick to make you buy more "stuff", and if your dog has a proper diet, with fresh meat, vegetables, bones - I also occasionally give my dog free range raw chicken halves, complete with bones and a few feathers still attached - , and occasionally a top quality dry food, like science diet, you shouldn't have any trouble with his teeth or gums.
Reply:Try giving your dog a healthy treat called Greenies, its a bone on one end and a toothebrush on the other . Completely edible and it cleans their teeth for you. My dog loves it.

Can I use my toothpaste to brush my dog's teeth?

I would only have some household items available....no market near, much less pet supplies. So what could I use that I might have on hand?

Can I use my toothpaste to brush my dog's teeth?
No, human toothpaste contains fluoride, that is toxic if ingested. We spit out the toothpaste, so that is why we use it. A dog will swallow it.

As someone mentioned, paste made w baking soda works. You could also order some doggie paste online. Rawhide chews also help.
Reply:Baking soda works great to brush their teeth.
Reply:No to human toothpaste. Instead, put a bit of baking powder on the brush and add a bit of water. Your dog will not like the taste, but its safe!
Reply:NO! i wouldnt risk it. go to a pet store like petco or petsmart and they will have the right toothpaste for your dog.
Reply:It won't hurt your dog to use your toothpaste. But I think baking soda is best.
Reply:NO!!! Do not use human toothpaste on a dog. It is poisionous to them. Try using some baking soda until you can get him some Dental Bones or a tooth-cleaning appointment at a groomer's or vet's.
Reply:Not human toothpaste, the fluoride is poison.

Feed him raw carrots, frozen green beans, those will clean his teeth right up.
Reply:No! There may be ingredients in it that can make your dog very sick. Plain water is best until you can get some made especially for dogs. The brushing action to remove food particles is what works best, not really the toothpaste.
Reply:You can not use human toothpaste with dogs or cats. It contains flouride which can be lethal to dogs and cats. If you can not get out to a store, try using baking soda. Bad tasting for the pet, but much more safe:)
Reply:Raw meaty bones are excellent for cleaning teeth!!

Never use your own toothpaste for brushing your dogs teeth.
Reply:It is best to use a tooth paste that is specifically formulated for your pet. For example CET toothpaste does not contain foaming agents and is meant to be swallowed. They also make Canine toothbrushes as well.
Reply:no just get the doggy toothpaste from the pet store
Reply:no you can not use your toothpaste but you can use your own toothbrush
Reply:no ether baking soda or dog toothpaste available at pet stores
Reply:WIT HDOG TOOTHPASTE YEA BUT NO PEOPLE TOOTHPAST:]
Reply:If you have nothing else available let it chew on an old washcloth. That should do until you can get something for your dog and its not harmful.
Reply:NO!!
Reply:You should always avoid any toothpaste (dog or human) that contains Xylotol or Flouride as these are unhealthy for dogs. The best solution is to put very little baking soda on a toothbrush (preferably meant for dogs but whatever works) and make sure you wet it enough to where the baking soda is almost dissolved. Just don't let them have too much of it and it really works great as toothpaste! remember----wet the baking soda and use as little as possible!!

When and how long should i brush my dog's teeth?

I brush my dog's teeth after dinner everyday..although once in a while i forget to...but i brush them for about 2 minutes.

When and how long should i brush my dog's teeth?
once a day untill he dies
Reply:3-5 mins....

they're just like humans
Reply:every day if you want consult your vet it might depend on the breed( an consult more than one cause they all give different answers)
Reply:Once every year. You don't want to brush them too much becuase the stuff that the vet puts in the pet can kill it if you clean them too much. It is impossible to brush his teeth by yourself. He'll probably bite you. I'd get his teeth brushed in Feb. of every year. It is very unhealthy to brush his teeth everyday. The idiots that wrote that should be reported. Now if you are just using the toothbrush and no cleaner, it would be ok to brush them everyday but your dog might hate that and you'd hate doing that. They have doggy breathmints that you can buy cheap that will keep his breath clean.
Reply:Every day! I buy dental chew bars for my dog it freshens his breath
Reply:Normally every other day is good but at least once a week. It also helps if your dog has something to chew on such as a rope toy (to floss) or greenies or rawhides. I would also recommend having a vet clean them once a year but if the teeth are in good condition the vet may skip the yearly cleaning. A carrot is good too because the vitamin A and beta carotene will help fight bacteria that can enter through the gums and get into the dogs blood stream. Plus, a dogs body will digest carrots unlike fillers such as corn or wheat.
Reply:Once a day would be fantastic if you and your dog can get on that schedule. But even every other day, or every few days will work wonders for your dogs breath and oral hygiene. The best toothbrushes are the finger cot style, that fit right on your own finger tip. It's less evasive for you dog, you're not actually sticking a foreign object in his mouth, and he'll be more receptive to your hand. Plus, they are so much easier to use! Good luck... and cudos to you for caring that much about your dog to keep his teeth clean. Bad teeth can lead to so many diseases that people don't realize. Happy brushing!

What happens if u don't brush ur dog's teeth? Is it bad for their health?

It's ok if you don't brush your dogs teeth, but when you get your dog groomed make sure to ask them if they'd brush it's teeth (it's better to have them brushed sometimes).

What happens if u don't brush ur dog's teeth? Is it bad for their health?
get tarter control bones they work fine
Reply:your not required to brush a dogs teeth. Feed them dog food with a dental formula in it. I'll do it for them. I feed my dog that type of food. and she's just fine.
Reply:tell the dog to brush them 3 times a day for each meal and then between snacks and he shouldnt get cavities
Reply:The same that would happen to you just slower en-less you feed your dog people food. They would rot. So your dog will not live as long as many dogs are doing today.
Reply:you dont necessarily have to brush your dog's teeth. trust me, i have 5 dogs and they are all healthy. i mean what is the use of brushing them if they are gonna eat something gross or lick their private parts...
Reply:my family never brushes dogs teeth they are fine
Reply:Hey! No it's not bad for their health! Hardly anyone brushes their dogs teeth. Their teeth are not like humans. They won't fall out or get black. Dogs don't like getting their teeth brudhed. Just leave him be... he'll like you not touching his teeth. Don't worry! Nothing will go rong.
Reply:I have had a lot of dogs that have lived to ripe old ages and I have never brushed their teeth and I have never had any problems.

Dog bones - crunchy, not the rawhide, work wonders.

Also, I will go to the store and get the beef bones and put them in the freezer and freeze them and then give them to my English Mastiffs and let them chew on them and get all the meat off - then I can put peanut butter in the center of the bone and freeze that and the dogs go nuts over it! They are only like a dollar and they last forever. This is an outside chew treat, please, not inside -slime city! Anyway, I don't know if it would be good for small dogs or not, but for my giant Mastiffs - it is heaven!
Reply:I have adopted a few dogs with bad teeth. Dogs experience pain as we do. For the little time it takes, the effort is worth it. Pet shops sell various flavors of dog toothpaste. Besides brushing the teeth daily, don't feed human food and schedule a checkup for the dog yearly. The vet will determine how often he needs to do a little extra cleaning.Cleaning the teeth adds to the dog's overall general health because it keeps away inflammation and infections.
Reply:I Give my dogs a "Real Bone" every Sunday morning for a treat and for their teeth. During the week, they get raw hide bones. My Vet recently remarked how white and strong my dogs teeth looked and I do not brush their teeth.
Reply:If you have the time to brush his teeth, then its always a good idea, depending on the breed, some tend to build up tarter faster than others ,, for example, poms, yorkies, ect seem to have geneticly worse teeth then big dogs. the problem is is that when you let the tarter build up it gets up underneath the gum line, in time it can cause heart and other organ problems because of the bacteria in their blood stream. your vet can advise you of a dental plan, depending on how bad or good they are. they will also carry a perscription food called T/D that you can give as snacks. this food splinters off when they are eating it and helps clean the teeth. do not use this as his diet though because it is high in fat. hope this helps!
Reply:I was about to give you my 2 cents worth but so many YA panelist have beaten me to it. N I must say that they r pretty good too. Ultimately, it's a matter of choice. If u can afford the extra cost n time, do brush, n follow up with dental care at the vet.

Is it ok not to brush my dog's teeth if the vet gives them a dental every year?

Its better to brush than have your dog put under every year. Every time a dog is put under it is a risk.

Large frozen broccoli heads do a pretty good job of cleaning teeth, if they will gnaw on it.

I would NOT give your dogs greenies, there have been reports of quite a few digestive blockages with them.

Is it ok not to brush my dog's teeth if the vet gives them a dental every year?
you should, if he/she only does it once a year
Reply:i don't brush my dog teeth..
Reply:yes
Reply:I get my dogs "Greenies". They are made to clean your dogs teeth...they come in all different sizes (bones that look like toothbrushes). My two Chihuahua's love them! You can find them at Petco or PetSmart...and some local pet stores carry them as well.
Reply:You should still brush your dog's teeth. My dog goes to the dentist once a month and I still brush her teeth in between visits.
Reply:NO! you still have to brush their teeth everyday. usually with a chlorohexadine or antbacterial paste. the yearly vet visit is a dental cleanup like when u go to your dentist every six months. so it important that you clean your dogs teeth. there are products you can ask youe vet like dental treats and water additives.it helps in dogs oral hygiene and nobody likes doggie breath.
Reply:Your vet agreed to give a dental every year?! That sounds a little harsh. It may seem okay to do dentals now, but as your dog gets older, it poses more of a risk to its health.

You should try to brush its teeth at least once a week. If your dog is opposed to this, try different kinds of brushes (finger brush, etc.) Take baby steps, desensitizing it to this will be better for it in the long run--and your vet and groomer will thank you.

In the meantime, give your dog denta bones/stix or rawhide sticks.
Reply:It's best to brush his teeth if you can, but it's not essential (unless you feed him that awful fake hamburger doogy junk food!) Most people don't do it regularly.
Reply:I Give My Dog Iams Dental Tartar Treats.

She Loves Them, And Her Teeth Are Perfectly Healthy.
Reply:ask your vet if they stock logic oral hygine gel. you dont need to brush the teeth enzymes break down the tatar when the animal licks it off your finger much safer then letting your animal have a general anaesethic once a year.

I was talking and my cuz's dog's teeth got worn down by knuckle bones... I use them...?

So should I switch to rawhide? he hates nylabones, he is basicly chewing on plastic!!!!! And he is a 3 year old lab... please!

I was talking and my cuz's dog's teeth got worn down by knuckle bones... I use them...?
just reduce the amount of ones to maybe once a month as a substitute pigs ears are good so are Kong's full of meat paste
Reply:Try not to give as much, the nylabone, or kong will not wear on the teeth as much, and the kong you can fill with goodies:) Also try cow hoofs, pig ears, things like that, but yes rawhide you can also try just keep a close eye on his that he's not eating to quick, and when it gets to small throw it away or he can swolle it hole and get sick.
Reply:Rawhides can be very dangerous especially if your dog is likely to tear off a large piece at once and swallow it as it can significantly expand in size in the gut and create a blockage.
Reply:my dogs teeth get worn down too, did stop her from getting her championship. I only give knuckle bones outside and 2 times a month, rest of the time it's kong, stuffed, so they are very interested and play with them for hours.
Reply:Rawhide isn't great for any dog. It can chip their teeth, lodge in the throat or cut the mouth and internal organs.

Bones do the same thing and make pooping very difficult if large pieces are present (if it's broken and swallowed)

Try Dentabones. They take awhile to eat, clean the teeth, have a nice flavor for the dog and leave their breath smelling fresh...plus they are relatively cheap.

We've given them to our 2 Labs and it lasts the better part of 20 minutes with our female and about 30 minutes with our male.

How do you remove tarter from your dog's teeth?

Tartar is generally removed by a vet during teeth cleaning. Many vets now use an ultrasonic device to do this.

Once tartar is there, this is pretty much the only way to remove it.

Treats, toothbrushing, and food will not remove tartar once it has formed.

However, providing proper dental care BEFORE can help prevent the development of it.

How do you remove tarter from your dog's teeth?
Tarter?
Reply:idk
Reply:they sell special stuff for it in pet stores or you also take it to the vet and they will take it out as well
Reply:stores have treats and bones that help with teeth
Reply:there are some dog treats then can prevent it or something like that, my aunts dog used them and i tthink they worked, they were iams tartar treats
Reply:yes =)
Reply:take him to the groomer
Reply:They have several kinds of treats for dogs that remove tarter from their teeth and also you can brush your dog's teeth with a toothbrush....easier said than done, since he will try to eat the toothbrush, but my little fella loves the dental treats! Good luck fellow dog lover!
Reply:Brush them. That's what I do for my bulldog.
Reply:Brush your dogs teeth, I know that toothpaste is made for dogs. Also there are some doggy treats that are sold that claim they will clean a dogs teeth.

See links
Reply:They make special dog biscuits designed to clean a dog's teeth and get rid of his/hers bad breath.
Reply:Id try getting a dentabone from the pet shop for him/her to chew on.
Reply:I think there are some types of dog biscuits you can buy which help remove the tarter.
Reply:buy something called pedigree denta-stix, they are brilliant, they are crossprism shaped and when the dog chews it the the tartar is brushed off, not recommended for bigdogs though as they could just munch it.

Or you could try doggy toothbrushed however it can be messy and getting you dog to obey isnt the easiest of tasks . Also to freshen breath i believe you can buy treats with a menthol unlining flavour and smell to help freshen doggy's breath :)
Reply:Better let a Vet do it - if it is necessary. InciDENTALly, it's tartar.
Reply:Tartar is removed by your vet. They will give the dog a dental cleaning.
Reply:There's the vet, of course, to get things clean -- just like your own dentist. And for maintenance, there are special brush things and so on. But my dog has the most beautiful teeth, and all I do is get sliced beef marrow bones (shank), about 1 inch thick from the butcher or grocery store, and give him those. I roast them in a 300 degree oven for an hour or so (kills germs, removes fat), and give one to my dog before I go to bed -- a new one once or twice a week. He goes at it in the dark, and I use earplugs! The marrow inside makes him really go for gnawing, and the sharp-cornered shape of the circles of bone clean his teeth perfectly. Plus, eating the bone marrow is a fabulous thing for his coat and skin, and he LOVES it.

Frankly, brushing a dog's teeth daily is the sort of thing I could imagine one of the girls doing on "Sex and the City" and losing her boyfriend over. Great idea I suppose, but how many people will really follow through with it? I'm sure I'll get mucho "Thumbs Down" for this answer, but all I can tell you is that it really works for me and the evidence is right there in the dog's mouth -- all teeth white as can be right to the gumline and perfectly clean breath all the time.
Reply:Well I swear by "Pet Kiss". My groomer recommended for my little Bichon. It's an all natural liquid that you mix in their water. I bought it from my groomer but found it cheaper on line. It's main ingredient is beet juice. I buy mine from this site: DRS FOSTER %26amp; SMITH . com. Oh it also works great for their breath too. Good luck.
Reply:I bought a Purina Busy Bone Ultimate for my dog last week and it took a ton of tartar off her teeth. My dog won't let me brush her teeth and I refuse to pay my vet some huge sum for the removal of it.

The bone cost me $5.70 at the grocery store and it really did a great job cleaning her teeth. One tooth was entirely covered and now is 85% clean. My dog is a Husky/Shepard mix and is 10 years old. There are smaller bones for smaller dogs.

How important is it to clean my dog's teeth? and how often?

I need professional advice

How important is it to clean my dog's teeth? and how often?
VERY IMPORTANT! I WOULD SAY TWICE A DAY, IF POSSIBLE.
Reply:It's very important that you clean your dogs teeth.

Plaque builds up and their teeth can decay, which can lead to serious heath issues. Like heart problems.

It isnt practical for someone to tell you to clean them twice a day, because most people cant... It isnt as easy to brush a dogs teeth as it is to brush your own.

Try doing it at least twice a week if you cant do it once every other day.

Also, there are special dog tooth brushes and tooth paste you should use.

You can find them at any pet store, and maybe even a Wal*Mart or Target.

It might also be good to take your dog to the vets to get them cleaned every few months.
Reply:It's actually really important to clean your dogs teeth. Many people are ignorant to the fact that a lot of dogs have or are going to have gingivitis. Most adult dogs already have symptoms and the owners are just unaware.

If you have a small dog this is what I do for mine: I give him a toothbrush as a toy with DOGGY mint toothpaste. He loves it and brushes his own teeth by gnawing on the bristles for me. This gets the back where I could never get in my life and he does it daily himself.

Now if you have a big dog you can either brush it for him at least once a week (think about how nasty it is with us going a day without brushing). You can go with the toothbrush or the finger brush. There is also a liquid that you can add to their drinking water to get the tartar off or to help it. There are some rawhides that help in the process and are special so they would be found in some vet clinics.

Either way your dog should be getting his/her teeth cleaned. If it gets too bad over the years then consider a dental cleaning just like we do to get the caked tartar off ^_^
Reply:It really depends on your dog. I've had 12 year old dogs who never even had their teeth brushed and they were in great shape. But some breeds are more prone to tooth and gum problems, especially the small breeds it seems. Those dogs need their teeth brushed 2 - 3 times a week with dog toothpaste. Brushing their teeth regularly and feeding them dry food should cut down on the number of times a dog will need their teeth cleaned at the vet office.

Are there other alternatives to brushing a dog's teeth?

Offering Greenies and rawhides to your dog is asking for trouble... there have been cases where the dog choked on them....

Crunchy snacks are good, Dentabone, etc...

....and you could always call your veterinarian to see what they recommend.

Are there other alternatives to brushing a dog's teeth?
dental bones (normally green) work very well.
Reply:the name of the bone is called dentabone...it is very good for your dog's teeth....give him a kiss for me...
Reply:there are dog cookies on the market that help. Ask at your favorite pet store or contact PetSmart.

I have had several cats over the years, and each cat has gone to the dentist every four years or so for a cleaning. As long as they are healthy and not too old they can withstand the medication used that will put them to sleep for the procedure.
Reply:Dogs don't need as much friction to clean their teeth as we do, because their toothpaste works by enzyme action. You can get wipes that have the same enzymes and just rub the wipes on the dog's teeth (you only need to do the outer - cheek-side - surface.) Get your dog's teeth professionally cleaned at least biannually and help maintain clean teeth with dental toys and crunchy food and treats.
Reply:One you can have your groomer brush your dogs teeth, usually it will just be a few dollars more. Or you can get denal bones which are green and those help with the breath and clean the teeth.
Reply:You can get them rawhide chew treats. They love 'em! It kills germs in their mouth and sharpens their teeth at the same time. Warning: Rawhide smells. Try them.

Do you have any tips for brushing dog's teeth?

My pup loves the taste of his toothpaste and love chewing on the toothbrush!

Do you have any tips for brushing dog's teeth?
Depending on the size of your dog will determine the size of toothbrush you will need to use. I buy my Pomeranians toothpast from my local vet. They have variety of flavors and the one I purchase is PORK, and it is safe if they swallow it. I must say I admire you for taking the time to provide your pet good hygiene. People sometimes do not realize how sick your animal can get from dirty or infected teeth. It can cause all kinds of illnesses including kidney damage. Good luck in your venture.
Reply:Traquilize the dog. THen brush it's teeth.
Reply:Change the toothpaste
Reply:trick the dog with treats, and make sure that the toothpaste is liked, but do not let the dog lick it, I had that happen and she would not open her mouth for me for a week, I have tried many times, keep everything ready and, don't make her aware of what is going on, they know all............
Reply:they actually have teeth cleaning stuff for dogs like biscuits and other types of food, just give it that and let the dog use toothpaste as a toy.
Reply:Dog bones and some snacks work. or put him to sleep some how and use a toothbrush.
Reply:never ever use human toothpaste for dogs,,VERY TOXIC there are lots of different products on the market, get them used to it by first using your finger and dog toothpaste and rub their teeth, and later introduce the brush. make it fun and offer treats when they are well behaved during brushings
Reply:be veery gentle and make them comfy.
Reply:Start off using a plastic glove.....I get 'em at the Dollar store, for 100 for a dollar)Put a little peanut butter or cheese spread on one finger of it, then rub your dog's gums with that. This will get him liking you messing with his mouth. From there, get canine toothpaste at your pet supply, and put it on your finger, the same as you were doing with the peanut butter, and when he accepts that, you can begin using the pet toothbrush.

Always use baby steps in any dog training. That way they never forget.
Reply:I found that if you feed him hard dog food, and don't feed him alot of people food, his teeth should be fine. I have a 5 year old black lab and her teeth are all white and her breath smells fine ( a sign of tooth decay ). Some of her teeth are wearing down but the vet says that is normal and not to worry about it.

What can you do to clean a dog's teeth?

if your dogs teeth allready have a heavy buildup of tarter on them, you cant get it off at home. You will need to see your Vet,and have them do it.

What can you do to clean a dog's teeth?
brush its teeth!
Reply:brush it's teeth like we usually do..
Reply:they sell dog tooth paste and tooth brushes, but if there already really bad you may want to take hom to the vet to be professionaly cleaned
Reply:I like to recommend the rope toys, the ones that are just bundled/twisted string tied in a knot.

I soak the rope toy in unsalted broth, then dry in a slow oven. This makes the dogs want to chew all the flavoring out, and it works like dental floss. The one in the Hartz Mountain display at your grocer's is fine, or the ones at your pet supply, but don't get the cheap dollar store kind, as they are not safe.

Also, changing to a kibble with all natural human grade ingredients will help. I feed Canidae, and my dogs' teeth never need cleaning, and their breath is fine.

Other all natural digestible kibbles are Innova, Solid Gold, Wysong, and several more. These kibbles cost more per bag, but less per month, as the dogs eat less and poop (waste) less.

They are much better for clean dog breath, as the ingredients are more digestible, and they don't produce the gasses of imcompleted digestion.
Reply:I use a little bit of baking soda and water mix, then just get a toothbrush you don't plan on using and brush.
Reply:There are dental sets at pet supply stores. They usually contain a toothbrush, a finger brush and toothpaste. If you have problems getting your dog to be comfy with you brushing their teeth, start with the toot paste on your finger and offer it to them as a treat. Them move to the finger brush and put the paste on it rubbing their teeth and gums gently. Then, move to the brush. Make a big deal of praise out of completing the task so they think they did something good! The more you brush the more comfortable they become with it. If this just absolutely will not work, you can take the dog to a groomer and let them deal with it. Or you can take your dog to your vet and they will do it for you. Be sure to ask what method the vet will use because some will sedate the dog to get the most effective cleaning but you may not want your pup medicated for this reason. If you start yourself when they are young, they will be much more receptive to you. Good Luck!
Reply:Vet can give you good advice on how to brush the dogs teeth, no joke. You can buy products at that office or a reliable pet store. Don't use human tooth paste. First, very important, you must take the dog in and have the vet clean them proffessionally! It is very important so you don't hit a bad tooth or cavity, and you don't want to press on the dog's gums!! vet first and ask the Vet for advice... Yes, it is that important.
Reply:put some toothpast in his water...
Reply:You can get him some biscuits that cleans his teeth and freshens his breath also.I tried to brush my dogs teeth but it doesn't work .He won't let me he is a big rottweiler.
Reply:There are these treats out now called Greenies. They were developed to be a treat that dogs like to chew on and are designed to be good for their breath and help in cleaning their teeth. They are green in color and shaped like toothbrushes. Make sure that you get the right sized treats for your dog. The size treats that you will need are based on the dogs weight. Also know that they are manufactured in a facility that processes products containing peanut products (if anyone has allergies).
Reply:Brush them. For an inbetween fix give them those denta bones.
